It’s That Time of Year
It’s hard to believe, but it is that time of year again...time for 4-H kids to pick out show animals for the upcoming season. Even though the ol’ groundhog said ‘six more weeks of winter’ back on February 2nd, spring will be here before we know it.
Let me take this opportunity to invite you to our annual Kent Show Feeds meeting on March 2, 2009. The meeting and supper will be held at Ryan’s Restaurant in Auburn, IN. The meal will begin at 6 PM and the meeting will follow. Once again, Mike Speaker, the Kent Feeds Show Feed Specialist, will join us to showcase the Kent Show Feed products. Mike always has a tidbit or two he shares that can help anyone with their livestock project. This meeting is always informative and educational, and of course the food is good too!
As in the past, we will present a special feed buying opportunity for you to lock in prices for the season. And, great door prizes will be available for those in attendance. Please join us on March 2nd and if your friend or neighbor shows livestock, ask them to come along too! See you then!
Finally, we have an excellent set of barrows and gilts on the ground for the 2009 show season. Give us a call to set up appointments to view the pigs starting March 15th. -- SJM

Kent Show Pig Feeds - Product Spotlight
Stardom
Kent Stardom (formerly known as Leanium 22% Starter) is a unique starter pellet for baby pigs. It is designed to be fed to young show pigs from 3 weeks of age to 40 pounds. This product has a locked in formula that ensures it contains quality ingredients and consistent nutrition in every bag.
Stardom offers multiple sources of protein and carbohydrates including high quality grains, milk products, fishmeal, feeding oatmeal, and plasma. It features the exclusive Kent Flav-R-Ized process and small, 1/8 inch mini pellets for improved palatability and consumption. Little pigs readily consume this product at an early age.
Another great aspect of this pellet is that it will not cause bigger pigs to ‘scour’ on it because it is ‘too hot’ for them. It is designed to be fed through 40 pounds and is a great product to get young pigs ready for sales. Lastly, it contains showbloom!™ and NutriVantage™ (read more about both these products on the opposite page) to help with feed utilization, digestion, and immune system support.
Stardom is floor stocked with Denagard and CTC at 400g/ton. It may also be available with Mecadox 50g/ton and any approved drug can be added on a custom mix basis.
Hands Down
Hands Down is the most nutrient dense show pig feed Kent offers. It is a complete feed designed to optimize appearance and performance of show pigs. This product is also a great choice for breeders to use in getting prospect pigs ready for sales.
Hands Down is the premium feed Kent offers for show pigs. It has all the ‘goodies’ that make a show pig grow, stay healthy, and look good come show time. It also contains showbloom!™ and NutriVantage™. And, it can be ‘dressed up’ or ‘dressed down’ if needed, by adding Wide Open, Omegablume, Easy Cover, or Final Drive.
Prime Time
Prime Time is a grower/finisher feed designed to make show pigs express their genetic potential for growth and muscle.
For 2009, Prime Time’s formula is changed to and 18% protein and contains more fiber than the previous product. However, It still has a locked in formula product that you can count on bag after bag. It also contains showbloom!™ and NutriVantage™ for improved feed intake, skin and hair quality, and immune sytstem support. Prime Time’s ingredients allow the pigs to express their genetic potential for growth and carcass quality.
Prime Time is a great ‘baseline’ feed that is very economical, without sacrificing performance. It can be ‘dressed up’ or ‘dressed down’ with additive products like Wide Open, Omegablume, Easy Cover, or Final Drive, depending on how you want your pig to look.
Conditioner
Conditioner is very similar to Prime Time. It’s basic formula is the same as Prime Time except it is lower in protein and does not contain chromium. Chromium is known to decrease back fat and makes hogs appear leaner. Therefore, Conditioner is a great choice to feed show gilts. It can also be used on barrows or any pigs that need a softer look.
Shavings Update
The large flake pine shavings have been a big hit with those who have tried them. This premium shaving is not a byproduct; they are made from pine trees in the Southeast USA, not from floor sweepings of a furniture shop. These sterilized large flakes are screened multiple times for dust, thus eliminating respiratory problems.
The shavings come in regular sized bags that weigh around 35 pounds, but these shavings actually expand to 10 cubic feet. Because there are more shavings per bag, we find that we can get by with less bags per week to bed our animals. You would have to buy 7 cubic feet bags of common shavings for around $4.00 per bag to get the same price per cubic feet.
I will also be taking orders for 8 cubic feet bags of mini-flake shavings. These flakes are same quality as the large flake bedding, but are a little smaller sized flake.
Our next shipment will come sometime in late March or early April. Shavings can be picked up at our delivery point or delivered for a small charge. Quantity discounts for purchases of 50 or 100 or more bales are available.
Call for pricing and to place your order…260-410-2305.
NutriVantage™ and Showbloom!™
NutriVantage™ and showbloom!™ are products that are included in many of the showfeeds that Kent offers. However, their value should never be overlooked.
NutriVantage™ is a dense feed fortifier. It is a blend of natural ingredients, organic acids, vitamins, and trace minerals. It is mixed in swine diets to increase performance and maintain health. It promotes a healthy gut environment and aids nutrient availabilty and digestion. All these things help the animal to combat stress and support the immune system.
Showbloom!™ is an all natural nutritional supplement for livestock show animals. It contains pure, high-potency brewer’s yeast in a palatable pellet form. Showbloom!™ helps animals increase feed intake, aids in muscle development, and improves hoof condition. It also produces outstanding hair growth and shiny, healthy skin coat.
NutriVantage™ and showbloom!™ are two important ingredients in help maximize your animal’s performance and maintain their health.
